2-5 May 2012
The 9th Asia Pacific Travel Health 2012 conference-TRAVEL HEALTH AND VACCINES: THE ASIA-PACIFIC PERSPECTIVE was held at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel from May 2-5th 2012. This conference brought together more than 700 participants, faculty members and delegates from over 60 countries.
Our directors, Dr Wong and Dr Lam and 3 of our nursing staff, Ashikin, Siti and Wei Wei attended this conference. Dr Wong was also a member of the local organizing committee for the conference and gave a lecture entitled “Antimalarial Prophylaxis: Can we do better?”
Overall, it was a great opportunity for our medical and nursing staff to upgrade their knowledge and skills. It was also a good networking opportunity to meet with our regional colleagues and to share our “war stories”.
Our Staff Nurse Nur Ashikin Binte Mohd Tahir sat for the ISTM Certificate in Travel Medicine examination on 2 May 2012 followed by attending the conference. She shared:
“The important aspects I learnt at the conference include a deeper understanding of travel related diseases, the importance of prophylaxis and the ability to clarify doubts of patients under my care with more confidence.
Being part of the “Infectious Disease Specialists” group of clinics, we believe in the importance of educating our patients informed of their diseases and how they can cope with them.
Apart from the enriching experience, I also hope to impart my newly acquired knowledge to my colleagues not only on travel health related diseases but also ensuring that appropriate counseling on basic immunization needs is carried out.
I wish to thank my company for giving me the opportunity to attend this 3 days’ conference and sit for the Travel Medicine course.”
