10 March 2012
This event was the first of our group’s ‘Meet the Infectious Disease Specialists’ CME Seminars for Family Physicians.
It was attended by 147 doctors, way above our expectations. We scrambled to accommodate the walk in participants with food and seats.
Our chairperson Dr Tan HooiHwa started by highlighting the importance of travel health especially to remote and exotic places for holidays and for community work. Of these travelers, up to 15% returned with some kind of travel related illnesses egdiarrhea, fever, skin problems and other infections. Some resulted in life threatening illnesses.
Other speakers covered the following:
- Dr Lam Mun San’s ‘Thrills and Chills’ on the evaluation of fever in the returned travelers.
- Dr Wong Sin Yew’s ‘Fun and Runs’ on diarrhoeal diseases in travelers
- Dr Chan Yuin Chew’s ‘Rashes including you know where’ on travel associated dermatological problems and sexually transmitted infections
- Dr Leong Hoe Nam’s ‘I wish I had seen you earlier’ on case studies in vaccine preventable travel associated infections
The 4 speakers presented a mix of case studies, published data, personal experiences with clinical images, tips on clinical evaluation, investigations and treatment.
There were interesting and stimulating questions during the two Q & A sessions.
The event was supported by an unrestricted educational grant from GlaxoSmithKline. It was our first group organized CME seminar and based on the participants’ feedback, it was certainly an encouraging one. We will strive to improve the scientific content and logistic arrangements.
We wish to thank Dr Tan HooiHwa for being our event chairperson, Dr Chan Yuin Chew for his ‘stimulating’ lecture and photos,
