“MEET THE INFECTIOUS DISEASE SPECIALISTS SEMINAR™”: UPDATE ON SKIN AND SOFT TISSUE INFECTIONS (SSTI)

On Sept 25th 2014 evening, we held our 4th seminar of 2014 on SSTI at the Regent Hotel. This Meet the Infectious Disease Specialists Seminar was targeted at specialists in orthopaedics and general surgery.

Skin and soft tissue infections are one of the most common acute infections that result in emergency hospitalizations. In recent years, 4 of the new antibiotics registered in Singapore, US and Europe have been for treatment of SSTI.

Dr Lam started the seminar with an overview of the clinical spectrum of SSTI and focused on the common and not so common infections. In addition, she also discussed some of the non-infectious conditions that may simulate SSTI.

Dr Wong summarized the guidelines that were recently published by the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA) in December 2013. There are many antibiotics that are available for the treatment of SSTI and the guidelines helped to simplify clinical decisions. Dr Wong also discussed the management of recurrent SSTI, especially those associated with methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

The seminar was supported by Astra Zeneca.
